The HIPAA Privacy Rule
This rule gives patients grater access to their own medical records
and more control over how their personal health information is used.
The rule also addresses the obligation of health care providers to protect
health information. As a general rule, patient records maintained by
Advanced Pathology Laboratory are confidential, and may not be released
to any individual other than the patient or the patient’s authorized
representative. Thus the Laboratory may not provide the patient records,
including laboratory results, or other information concerning the patient,
to an unauthorized third party. Such releases or disclosures require
patient’s written consent. See Authorization for Release of Information
and Pathology Material and Authorization for Pathology Specimen Referral.
